Nursing Home Abuse Prevention
Phoenix Lawyers Preventing Nursing Home Abuse
A recent study found that nearly one-third of nursing homes in the United States had been cited for a nursing home abuse violation within a two-year period. Almost half of these were serious enough to have a significant effect on a resident's health and wellbeing, even placing them in danger of death.
Because nursing home abuse is so widespread, it is critical that families learn to identify and prevent nursing home abuse. At Solomon & Relihan, we are dedicated to protecting the elderly by preventing nursing home abuse through legal action. We also teach our clients information they need to know about identifying abuse signs.
Signs of Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect
When you visit your loved one in a nursing home, you should look for signs of physical abuse. Carefully examine your loved one for suspicious or unexplained injuries including bruises, cuts, or broken bones.
Do not be afraid to move your loved one to examine underneath clothing, especially at points where the body rests against a bed or chair. These points are where bedsore s most commonly form. At the beginning stages, bedsores look like pink splotches that do not turn white when pressed.
You should also notice your loved one's surroundings. Is there water available? Does the room smell clean? Does the call button work and, if so, does a staff member respond promptly?
Changes in a loved one's mood may also be warning signs of nursing home neglect or physical or sexual abuse. If your loved one seems fearful of staff, or if they seem withdrawn or reluctant to answer your questions about care, you should be worried.
