Phoenix Attorneys Handling Nursing Home Falls
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1,800 older adults living in nursing homes die each year from fall-related injuries. Sadly, many of these deaths could have been prevented if nursing homes provided the kind of care their residents needed and deserved.
Since 1974, the lawyers at Solomon & Relihan have been representing personal injury victims throughout Arizona. We continue our work by representing the victims of nursing home falls, holding nursing homes accountable for the injuries and wrongful deaths they cause.
Falling is a serious problem for elderly and disabled nursing home residents. Nursing home falls cause a wide range of injuries:
- Fractures and broken bones
- Broken hips
- Subdural hematoma and other traumatic brain injury
- Internal bleeding
Why Nursing Home Falls Occur
In nursing homes, falls occur frequently because residents are often older, suffer from dementia or Alzheimer's disease, or have chronic conditions that involve weakness and difficulty walking. These residents also tend to have problems with cognitive ability — thinking and memory — that put them at risk of trips, slips, or falls when participating in daily activities.
These conditions require special assistance. But nursing homes are often understaffed. The staff they do have are overworked and underpaid. Too often, they fail to provide the supervision that residents require.
If your loved one has a balance problem or has difficult walking, the nursing home staff should have a written plan in place to provide assistance while walking. They should never ignore your loved one's desire to walk simply because assistance is necessary.
